Detecting Toxic Gases in Harmful Environments
It certainly helps to know what you’re doing but you don’t need a chemistry degree to use gas detector tubes or read the results. These gas detector tubes can help identify the presence of gases – toxic or nontoxic – and ensure safety in all sorts of environments.
Draeger has been a champion of personal protection and gas detection for over a century. And their Draeger tubes are no exception. Gas leaks, fires, chemical spills, and the like can contaminate a work environment. Draeger gas detection tubes help measure the air quality and determine whether toxic gases remain in the air.
What are gas detector tubes used for?
Gas detectors can measure hundreds of different gases. Some of the most common toxic or potentially harmful gases that are tested include:
- Arsenic
- Hydrogen chloride
- Dioxins
- Ethylene oxide
- Carbon monoxide
- Methane
- Formalin
- Tetrachloroethylene
- Chlorine
- Oxygen
Fixed and portable gas detection kits are great for identifying these harmful substances across popular industries, such as:
- Manufacturing
- Paper mills
- Research and development
- Electric, gas, and water utilities
- Petrochemical
- Refineries
- Automotive
- Construction
Gas detection process
Gas detection involves measuring concentrations of gases in the air, toxic or otherwise. The entire process, luckily, only takes minutes to identify whether an area is far too hazardous. There is a chemical inside these tubes that will react with whatever gas you’re measuring.
After the chemicals are mixed for a few minutes, the control gas will change color and rise to indicate the percentage (or ppm) of the toxic gas. It’s important to note that you will need to use a detector tube and sampling pump from the same manufacturer.
Also, you’ll have to have a safe way of transporting the tubes (and pump) from worksite to worksite. Safety is always the number one priority and using gas detection tubes is a simple way of testing for a variety of potentially harmful gases and substances.
