1. Keep Cylinders in a Cool, Dry, Well-Ventilated Area

Calibration gas cylinders should be stored in a protected and well-ventilated area. They should be kept at room temperature, away from heat sources, open flames, or direct sunlight. High temperatures can affect gas pressure and composition. They should be stored at least 20 feet from combustible materials

2. Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Extremely cold or hot environments can cause regulators or valves to function improperly and potentially affect gas composition. The best temperature ranges for most calibration gases are typically 50°F to 77°F.

3. Store Calibration Gas Cylinders Upright and Secure

Use cylinder racks or holders to prevent them from falling over. Never store cylinders lying down, especially refillable ones, as it can compromise pressure regulation.

4. Separate Full and Empty Cylinders

Label and organize full and used/empty cylinders clearly to avoid confusion during calibration or disposal.

5. Check Expiration Dates

Calibration gas cylinders have a limited shelf life - usually 12 to 36 months, depending on the gas mixture. Use a first-in, first-out system and dispose of expired cylinders according to local regulations.

3. Close Cylinder Valves After Use

Always shut off the cylinder valve after use to prevent leaks and preserve the gas.

4. Use in Well-Ventilated Areas

Even small amounts of gas can displace oxygen or create a hazardous environment. Always use calibration gas in areas with adequate ventilation.

5. Inspect Before Each Use

Employers are required to conduct gas cylinder inspections. Check for leaks, corrosion, damaged valves, or signs of tampering. If anything looks off, don’t use the cylinder.
